Hairspray The Musical is a feel-good comedy and winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score, as well as four Laurence Olivier Awards. With memorable songs such as Good Morning, Baltimore and You Can’t Stop The Beat, the show is a family-friendly, fun musical. Its timeless message that everyone should be treated equally regardless of social, cultural and physical differences is as relevant today as it was in the sixties.
In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, the quirky, plus-sized, teenage Tracy Turnblad has one dream: to dance on The Corny Collins Show. When she gets put in detention with the African-American students in the school, they teach her some of their dance moves, and her new found groove wins her a spot on Corny’s show. Overnight, Tracy transforms from a nobody into a star, and uses her newfound influence to advocate for racial integration on the television show. Tracy faces scrutiny and bullying from the network producer, Velma, and her popular, but vicious, daughter, Amber. With the help of the teenage heartthrob Link, host Corny Collins, and Motormouth Maybelle (the host of ‘Negro Day’), Tracy overcomes the odds and succeeds in her mission to integrate The Corny Collins Show.
Staged by EYT with a cast of 47 young people aged 10 to 18 years old, the show was a huge undertaking. Supported by over 30 volunteers on the production team, the resulting show was a triumph. Playing to full audiences every show, the cast excelled, producing amazing vocal performances and slick dance routines, full of energy and fun. The wardrobe, hair and make-up team worked hard throughout the run and the cast looked stunning every show, complimenting the beautiful staging and set that was designed and built by the production team. One of our aims at EYT is to provide experience for our members in all areas of theatre production, not just on stage, and we were delighted to have 14 of our youth members on the production team for Hairspray - lights, sound, hair, make -up, crew, wardrobe, front of house were all supported by our youth members.
Following our fantastic reviews of the show, we were delighted to find out in Jan 20 that the show had been nominated for “Best Youth Production 2019” in the annual NODA awards for our region and even more delighted to be awarded that title at the award ceremony in Mar 20.
